Your Home, Your Seasons, Your Rules
Why I'm done letting the calendar decide when it's time to decorate.
Every year, without fail, the same conversations start making their way around social media. It's too early for pumpkins. It's too soon for Christmas trees. We haven't even celebrated Halloween yet. Whatever happened to enjoying one holiday at a time?
And every year, I find myself wondering the same thing.
Who decided there were rules for when we're allowed to enjoy our own homes?
Somewhere along the way, decorating for the seasons became something people felt the need to defend. If you put your pumpkins out in August, you're rushing summer. If your Christmas tree goes up in October, you're skipping fall. If you leave your Christmas decorations up through January, you're holding on too long.
There's always someone with an opinion about what you should be doing in a home they don't even live in.
And I think that's a little ridiculous.
Decorating Has Always Been About More Than the Decorations
For me, decorating has never been about keeping up with trends or following some imaginary holiday schedule.
It's about how my home makes me feel.
It's pulling out decorations I've collected over the years, finding the perfect spot for something I forgot I had, and making ordinary rooms feel a little more special. It's rearranging shelves three times before getting them just right. It's the excitement of having an idea in my head and finally seeing it come together.
I genuinely enjoy the process. The decorating, the rearranging, the little details that nobody else might even notice.
And I don't think something that brings us that much happiness should come with a set of rules.
So Yes, I'm Decorating for Christmas in October
If you've been following along for a while, you probably already know that Christmas is my favorite time to decorate.
This year, I've been planning something especially fun for my home, and I've been looking forward to bringing it to life for months.
So while some people are still carving pumpkins and planning Halloween costumes, I'm packing away my fall decorations and pulling out the Christmas bins.
Not because I'm trying to rush through October. Not because I don't love fall. Believe me, I do. My house has been filled with pumpkins, autumn colors, and all the cozy things since August.
But I've enjoyed my fall home, and now I'm ready for something different.
And that's really all the reason I need.
I also know that some people wouldn't dream of putting up a Christmas tree before Thanksgiving. They love that tradition, and I think that's wonderful too.
That's the point. We don't all have to enjoy things on the same schedule.
Your Home Isn't on Anyone Else's Timeline
I think social media has made us a little too comfortable telling other people how they should live.
We see someone's Christmas decorations in October and feel the need to announce that it's too early. We see pumpkins in August and complain that summer isn't over.
But here's the thing. Someone else's decorations aren't taking anything away from your season.
Their Christmas tree doesn't make your Halloween any less enjoyable. Their pumpkins don't make summer end any sooner. And their decision to leave their holiday lights glowing well into January has absolutely no effect on when you take yours down.
You can scroll past something without needing to tell someone they're doing it wrong.
Our homes aren't department stores with decorating deadlines. They're the places where we spend our everyday lives. They should reflect what we love, not what everyone else thinks is appropriate for a particular date.
Life Is Too Short to Save Everything for Later
The older I get, the more I realize how much of life we spend waiting.
Waiting for the right time. Waiting for a special occasion. Waiting until everything is finished, organized, or perfect.
We save the good dishes for company. We keep the pretty candles tucked away because we don't want to use them up. We put off doing things we enjoy because somehow we've convinced ourselves there's a more appropriate time for them.
And for what?
If decorating your Christmas tree on October 18 makes an ordinary Sunday feel exciting, do it.
If you want to keep your fall decorations out until December because you love the colors and aren't quite ready to pack them away, do that.
If you don't decorate for the holidays at all, that's perfectly fine too.
There are enough things in life that we don't get to choose. The little joys we create inside our own homes shouldn't be one of them.
Make Home a Place You Love Coming Back To
I've always believed that you don't need a big house, expensive furniture, or picture-perfect rooms to make a home feel special.
Some of my favorite things are secondhand finds, decorations I've had for years, and pieces that probably wouldn't mean much to anyone else.
It's not about how much you spend or whether everything matches. It's about creating a home that feels like you.
And sometimes that means pumpkins in August, Christmas trees in October, or leaving the twinkle lights up a few weeks longer because you aren't quite ready to say goodbye to them.
So here's your reminder, in case you needed one.
You don't have to explain why you're decorating early. You don't have to wait until everyone else is ready. And you certainly don't need the internet's approval to enjoy your own home.
Put up the tree. Bring out the pumpkins. Light the candles. Use the good dishes.
Make your home a place that makes you happy, whenever that happens to be.
Because the best time to enjoy your home isn't when the calendar tells you to.
It's right now.
Sincerely,
Kari Anne
