A Simple Fall Porch Using What I Already Have
There’s something about decorating the porch for fall that makes the whole house feel ready for the season.
My porch is small, so I don’t have a ton of room to work with, but I’ve learned that you really don’t need a huge front porch to make an impact. A few pumpkins, mums, baskets and pieces I already had were enough to give this little space a cozy fall feel.
And this year, I kept things especially simple.
Decorating a Small Porch for Fall
When you’re working with a small porch, every piece has to earn its spot.
Instead of trying to squeeze too much into the space, I focused on layering a few things around the front door and letting the natural vines growing along the railing add some extra texture.
The vines already make the porch feel a little tucked away and cottage-like, so I leaned into that instead of trying to cover them up.
I added pumpkins, mums, baskets and planters in different heights so everything wouldn’t sit on one flat level. Even in a small space, varying the heights makes the whole setup feel fuller without actually adding more stuff.
Yes, My Pumpkins and Mums Are Faux
One thing I’ve learned over the years is that decorating doesn’t have to be harder or more expensive than it needs to be.
The mums and pumpkins on my porch are faux.
And I’m completely okay with that.
Real mums are beautiful, but I’ve bought enough of them over the years only to watch them dry out much faster than I hoped. Faux mums let me put them out at the beginning of the season and enjoy them all the way through fall without worrying about watering them, replacing them or trying to keep them alive.
The same goes for pumpkins.
Buying good faux pumpkins once means I can pull them out year after year instead of buying a whole new porch full of pumpkins every October.
It’s one of those little choices that makes seasonal decorating easier for me and, over time, saves money too.
Use What You Have in a New Way
A lot of the pieces on this porch aren’t really “fall” pieces at all.
The baskets, planters and little wagon can stay in rotation throughout the year. What changes is simply what I put inside or around them.
In spring, the same containers could hold tulips or other flowers.
For Christmas and winter, I can replace the mums with little evergreen trees, greenery or branches.
The wagon can hold pumpkins now, flowers later and maybe even a small Christmas tree when December comes around.
I love decorating this way because it means I’m not constantly buying things that only work for one month of the year.
Layer Instead of Buying More
Whenever I feel like a space needs something else, I try layering before I go out and buy something new.
A basket tucked behind a planter.
A pumpkin placed in front of another.
A smaller pot raised slightly behind a larger one.
Even turning something at a different angle can completely change the way a little corner looks.
Fall decorating especially lends itself to this because pumpkins, baskets, leaves, mums and natural textures all look good mixed together.
Nothing has to match perfectly.
Actually, I think it looks better when it doesn’t.
Making a Small Porch Feel Cozy
I think sometimes we see these huge front porches online filled with stacks of pumpkins, giant planters and rows of mums and think we need all of that to create something beautiful.
But most of us are working with regular houses and regular porches.
And that’s okay.
I’d rather make the most of the space I have than wait for some future house or bigger porch to decorate the way I want to.
A few pumpkins, some mums, a favorite basket and a little creativity can completely change the way your home feels when you walk up to the door.
And really, that’s what seasonal decorating is about for me.
Making home feel special for the season we’re in.
So for now, this little porch is officially ready for fall.
