5 Simple Ways to Make Your Home Feel Cozy for Fall

Fall is when I want home to feel its coziest.

As the evenings get cooler and the sun starts disappearing a little earlier, I find myself reaching for blankets, turning on lamps before dinner and adding little touches around the house that make me want to stay home.

And the best part is, making your home feel cozy for fall doesn’t require completely redecorating.

Usually, it’s the little things that make the biggest difference.

1. Bring a Little Bit of the Outdoors In

Fall gives us some of the prettiest decorating materials, and so many of them can be found right outside.

Branches with changing leaves, dried flowers, grasses, pinecones and even interesting bare branches can make a beautiful fall arrangement.

I especially love putting oversized branches into an old crock or vintage pitcher. They don’t have to be perfectly arranged either. I actually think they look better when they’re a little wild and imperfect.

It’s an easy way to bring the feeling of the season inside without buying another thing.

2. Layer in Texture

When I think about a cozy fall home, texture is one of the first things that comes to mind.

This is when the lighter things of summer start making room for chunky blankets, woven baskets, warm woods and softer fabrics.

You don’t have to change everything. Toss a blanket over the arm of the sofa. Add a basket beside a chair. Layer a pillow or two onto a bench.

Those small changes can instantly make a room feel warmer and more inviting.

And let’s be honest, having a blanket within reach at all times is basically a fall requirement.

3. Change Your Artwork

Artwork is one of my favorite ways to change a room for the season.

A small fall print tucked onto a shelf, leaning against the back of a cabinet or hanging in an existing frame can completely change the feeling of a space.

I love seasonal artwork because it doesn’t take up much room when it isn’t being used. You can simply swap it out as the seasons change.

It also doesn’t have to scream FALL. A landscape, an old-fashioned botanical, a pheasant, a crow or something with warm autumn colors can bring in that seasonal feeling in a much more subtle way.

4. Create Little Fall Moments

Not every fall decoration needs to be part of a big display.

Sometimes my favorite things are the tiny seasonal moments tucked around the house.

A little pumpkin sitting on a stack of books. A bowl filled with apples. A few stems tucked into a small pitcher. A vintage piece mixed in with something new.

These are the things you notice as you walk through your home, and together they make the whole house feel like fall without every surface needing a complete makeover.

And sometimes one pumpkin turns into two. Then five.

And then suddenly you have a pumpkin patch in your living room.

It happens.

5. Make the Evenings Feel Cozy

This might be my favorite one because it really isn’t about decorating at all.

As the days get shorter, I start turning on the lamps a little earlier. Candles come out. Blankets stay on the sofa. Something warm might be simmering in the kitchen.

The house starts to feel different in the evenings.

You can have the prettiest fall decorations in the world, but I think cozy comes from how a home feels more than how it looks.

Turn on the lamp. Light the candle. Pull the blanket over your lap and enjoy the season you’re in.

Creating a cozy home for fall doesn’t have to mean buying more or completely changing your house.

Use what you already have. Bring a few pieces of the season indoors. Move things around, add some layers and create those little moments that make you happy when you walk past them.

Because at the end of the day, the best fall decorating isn’t really about the pumpkins or the blankets or the perfectly styled shelves.

It’s about creating a home that makes you want to stay awhile.
